Virtual Design & Construction Manager
Location: Richmond, VA
Compensation: $105,000–$125,000 base salary
Relocation: Up to $5,000 available if relocating to greater Richmond area
 
Position Summary
The VDC Manager (Virtual Design & Construction) leads, develops, and mentors a team of 5 to 10 detailers , driving high-quality, cost-effective Virtual Design & Construction execution across projects. This role requires a hands-on leader who is both a strategic planner and a technical expert—someone who can guide teams through complex coordination challenges while advancing VDC innovation and best practices.

The VDC Manager collaborates closely with sales, estimating, project management, design, manufacturing, and installation teams to support projects from preconstruction through closeout. This position plays a critical role in decision-making, risk evaluation, and continuous improvement across VDC operations. Experience with Tekla - Revit - AutoCAD - Autodesk Fabrication - Navisworks - Bluebeam are required. 

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development

  • Act as a coach and mentor, providing hands-on training to VDC staff

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing VDC team aligned with project volume and business needs

  • Recruit, onboard, and manage detailers and outsourced resources

  • Lead weekly team meetings to ensure deadlines, quality, and capacity targets are met

  • Prepare and deliver BIM/VDC training sessions for management and field staff
Project Execution & Coordination

  • Lead VDC efforts across all assigned projects, ensuring models align with construction schedules, fabrication, and installation needs

  • Interpret project schedules and align BIM workflows with team member skill sets

  • Attend and lead coordination meetings, jobsite visits, and client-facing BIM discussions as required

  • Present BIM execution plans and collaborate with client BIM teams

  • Support VDC implementation during marketing and preconstruction phases
Cost Control, Metrics & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate VDC implementation cost data on a per-project basis

  • Assist with detailing budgets during pre-bid and post-bid phases

  • Monitor actual vs. projected costs and budgets on regional projects

  • Track, evaluate, and report VDC performance metrics

  • Deliver end-of-project metrics, case studies, and lessons learned

  • Participate in closeout meetings to share insights and continuous improvement opportunities
Standards, Technology & Continuous Improvement

  • Oversee and enforce VDC documentation and modeling standards

  • Coordinate internal VDC standards with client requirements and manage standard-driven design changes

  • Evaluate project risk vs. reward and support informed decision-making with project teams

  • Stay current on BIM/VDC software advancements, database improvements, and training initiatives

  • Support development and implementation of corporate VDC goals

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of BIM drafting/design experience in construction, plus relevant education

  • 10+ years of experience in construction manufacturing and/or installation environments

  • 10+ years of experience using detailing and coordination tools including:

    • Revit

    • AutoCAD

    • Autodesk Fabrication

    • Navisworks

    • Tekla

    • Bluebeam

  • 3+ years of proven experience leading, coaching, and developing teams

  • Strong understanding of construction delivery methods and contractual structures

  • Ability to multitask, work independently, and exercise sound judgment

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to pass post-offer drug screening and any required background checks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior military experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
